Friday 03/13/09

Traded lightly in the morning, and pretty much nailed the bottom (thanks to $TICK and Volume inidicators). I went long at 739.75; only held it for +3 points though. Today's gross P/L was +$125.00. Overall, it's been an OK week considering I wasn't planning on trading much to begin with. The total P/L for the week is +$1,512.50, for the most part, trading with one contract. Today's P/L would have been higher but TradeStation started throwing the "can not route order" error again in the afternoon, and I missed out on 3-5 pts of gains. I'm glad I don't have my live account at TradeStation. In other news, my new computer came in today! Can't wait to get that up and running!

Market closed on strength but I wonder, who the hell's holding Long over the weekend, especially in this market where the slightest bit of news can trigger a sell-off? Looking at the 240-min and the Daily charts, next area of resistance looks to be in the mid 760s and then 800.

Thursday 03/12/09 - Know thyself

In several posts, I've written how I need to put my bias aside and trade what I see, and yet I was unable to do that today. I began the day by shorting the bounces, and was down -$100 in the morning. I *knew* a break-out was in the mix at the 732 level in the morning, but thanks to my short bias, my brain was unwilling to *act* upon that knowledge. This is where knowing yourself and your weaknesses comes into the picture. I knew that I was trading my bias and not the charts, and knowing that weakness helped me keep my losses very small; I was using 2-4 tick stops. In the past, I would be down $500-1000 on a day like today. Instead I ended the day with a +$175 gain with zero long positions and a little bit of luck.

We closed on strength today but I am expecting a re-test of lower levels before we move any higher. Btw, I was trading the March contract today, but have switched over to the June contract for tomorrow.

I got stuck in a short position in the afternoon. I wanted to exit for a +2 point gain a couple of times, but Tradestation kept throwing an error message (pictured above). This emphasizes the use of OCO bracket orders. I have my platform setup to automatically submit a bracket order (1 stop-market 6 ticks from entry and 1-limit at profit target 12 ticks from entry). I think I got lucky on this one and my profit target was hit just before price shot off to higher levels.

The following chart shows why I would short the double-top on price ($tick divergence) and why I should have reversed to a long (higher low on $tick)

Cramer vs. Jon Stewart

LOL...Bad move Cramer!

Wed. 03/11/09 - Gotta pay to play

My PC is an utter POS. Charts freeze on it all the time, and there's no way I could risk real $ trading on this machine, so I ordered a new dual-core machine this afternoon (gotta pay to play). I traded part of the morning on my younger brother's quad-core PC with 4 GB or ram hooked to a 26" wide-screen display. A couple of those 26" screens would be perfect for trading (my current setup is three 19" screens, except only two are functioning since my current PC is messed up). Anyway, the new box should be here by the weekend and I'll be up and running on it by Monday :-)

Today's trades resulted in a gross P/L of +$375.00. We had an open gap at 733, and almost got a gap-fill (price hit 732.50). It's close enough that I think we can consider that gap, filled. I was expecting some resistance at that point, and it worked out fairly well. The following charts show today's trades.

Left a lot on the table but again, this week's focus is not trading and I was occupied with other tasks while putting these trades on. Speaking of which, I need to get back to finishing my final paper for one of my classes, so wrapping this up here. For tomorrow, lets be mindful of the retail sales and jobless claims data coming out at 7:30 AM (central), and the open gap below. I would still expect some resistance in the 733 area, but if we can break it on volume, 750s are not out of the question. S&P closed below its mid-point which, to me, is a sign of weakness but as always, trade what you see.
